TYPICAL CATS
Fri. Sep. 10 - 8:00 pm - 17+ -
TYPICAL CATS - mp3
Featuring Qwel, Qwazaar, Denizen Kane & DJ Natural, Typical began a relentless campaign to restore a fallen hip hop world to its former promise and glory. The talent assembled was unmistakable, the sound created was formidable. Firmly planted in tradition, unorthodox in invention and possessed of a strength only earned in the furnace of experience, their Sound is the Future that hip hop's Past would have had if its Present weren't held hostage by the uninspired and unrepentant.
QWEL & MAKER - mp3
Hailed by many as one of the most skilled and innovative lyricist since hip hop's conception, Qwel is not your average ambiguous applause monger. Seasoned within Chicago’s unrelenting battle circuit, Qwel found his niche among his soon to be crew at University of Chicago’s WHPK Wednesday night rap show. The show, a staple in Chicago underground history, was then hosted by DJ Natural and Kid Knish. There he would meet both Denizen Kane and Qwazaar and soon after they would form Typical Cats. The project that they shortly after released, would instantly gain both national and international acclaim. When Qwel and Maker first discussed the possibility of collaborating on the first of the four horsemen/seasons albums neither one of them could have fully known exactly what they were unleashing on the underground hip hop world. With Makers rare and completely unprecedented production style, Qwel saw an opportunity to return to true school ripping it with the proper canvas to topple topics that the cornier, true school emcees wouldn’t dare. With a much more up beat and banging approach to the songs Qwel and Maker dropped one of the greatest underground hip hop albums of all time, "The Harvest".

STRUNG OUT
Thu. Sep. 23 - 5:00 pm - All ages -
STRUNG OUT - mp3
String Out is a machine-gun fire of heavy-hitting sounds blending hardcore punk and lashings of metal frothed with harmonies and whipped up by the strong melodies. Behind the power and fury of the music, however, lies the eloquence of the lyrics, the band's true forte. Pretty much anyone can play raging hardcore, but Strung Out does it better and with more conviction than most; it's their words that truly connect them to the audience. Theirs is the lyricism of an all-night talk-fest, when suddenly thoughts crystallize and words become inspired and effortlessly skewer, amplify, and clarify salient discussion points.

STREET DOGS

mpshows.com presents
STREET DOGS - mp3
The overall sound grabs the listener immediately, hearkening back to big sound of early Clash and Stiff Little Fingers records. There is an urgency to the sounds coming from the speakers that rarely finds its way out of a punk record anymore. The hooks are huge and the disc never loses its sense of melody. Even when razor sharp guitars cut straight through the song, the bass and drums keep everything tight and the whole record keeps your feet tapping and your fist pumping. If this record were to play in your local pub, the Guinness would taste that much better as you raised your pint skyward.
FLATFOOT 56 - mp3
Flatfoot 56 has been playing Celtic punk since 2000, infusing melodious bagpipe and mandolin music. Flatfoot56 is made up of three brothers (Tobin, Justin and Kyle Bawinkel) and a terrific piper friend, Josh Robieson.

THE QUEERS
Sat. Dec. 11 - 5:00 pm - All ages -
THE QUEERS - mp3
The Queers are doing a pop tour. Breaking it down for a softer sound, the QUEERS will be doing all their Beach Boys sounding songs with huge harmonies and such. Still the full band, but an additional keyboard player (Mandy from Karmella's Game) will be along to help with the sweetness. Formed in 1982 by Portsmouth, New Hampshire native Joe King (aka Joe Queer), the name 'Queers' was used simply to poke fun at what he called the "Art Fag" community in New Hampshire. The band broke up in 1984, but reformed with Joe Queer and a new line-up in 1990. That year, the band signed with Shakin' Street Records and released their first album Grow Up. The album earned the band notoriety within New England, but with the release of their next album 1993's Love Songs for the Retarded, on Lookout! In 2006 after releasing 6 albums on Lookout!, they signed with Asian Man Records.
